Case Study: Microgenetics

Introducing Tammy Hassel, Director of Microgenetics

Bloomfield Harris had the pleasure of working with Tammy to develop a Mental health and wellbeing policy and guide. Microgenetics Limited specialises in producing accurate rapid test methods for pharmaceutical and veterinary industries. They are based in the new Corsham Science Park in Wiltshire. We asked Tammy to talk to us about wellbeing and this is what she said.

Hello Tammy, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed. Please could you tell us about your role?
I’m the Director of Microgenetics since the start of 2017. I have been managing a small team with corporate support in taking two different ideas and bringing them to market within the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.  Our aim is to revolutionise microbiology by bringing innovative products to market that solve age old problems for microbiologists.

What made you passionate about microbiology/microgenetics?
I am fascinated and amazed by microbes, their diversity and capability to exist in every extreme environment and contributions to our ecosystems is fascinating. I am passionate about Microgenetics as it provides a platform where I can give back to industry, contribute to it moving forward and challenge the status quo, change and the challenges it brings within the regulatory setting is a challenge I relish and overcoming these challenges is immensely satisfying. I have always wanted to run my own business so I can positively influence the life of others, be it through how I am able to grow my employees or through earning profits that can be used to change the lives of others. I feel its very important that in life we take what we have and give back – share in the bounty.

You recently worked with us on a mental health and wellbeing policy for Microgenetics. What interested you in the idea?
Mental health and wellbeing has definitely had a raised status in the media recently. This increased awareness of the importance and the natural benefits it would bring to a work place environment where staff are nurtured and looked after, made it an obvious area of focus. Its important to me that we acknowledge that mental health and wellbeing play an important part in ensuring your employees are operating at their best, which when you hire good people is exactly what you want.

What have you taken straightaway from the policy and guide that has made a difference to your employees?
The need to treat mental health equal to physical health.

What role do you think employers will have in the future regarding employee wellbeing and mental health?
We will all be required to treat mental health and wellbeing the same as a physical condition and respect that it is something we need to support for our employees

Are there any factors that you feel contribute to employee workplace wellbeing?
Team breakout sessions for sharing, regular one on one catch up sessions, approachable management, space to chill out, relaxed workplace environment, comfortable work place environment, conscious work load management, a clearly defined mental health and wellbeing policy.

In your employment experience what has contributed the most to your wellbeing at work?
The ability to speak to my line manager about how I am feeling when overwhelmed with work and for the manager to care sufficiently to rearrange in line with my needs and capabilities.

You’re a very talented and intelligent business woman, so we’d love to know how you take care of your wellbeing outside of work?
When I am on point – exercise, healthy diet for good stress management, time spent with friends and family away from work and me time are all vital to good mental wellbeing. Stress taken from work and to home can be very dangerous and its important to find ways to manage this.

Finally,  the Buddha said ‘One moment can change a day, one day can change a life, one life can change the world’ what does that mean to you?
I love this, to me it means with the right attitude you truly can grasp every opportunity that comes your way and make the best of that opportunity which will lead to positive change in the world.

Thank you so much for you time Tammy, it’s been a pleasure working with you.
